Rita - the Queen of Speed is a
launched coaster in UG Land, propelling riders 100 km/h in just under 3
seconds. This European first, sits along side Corkscrew, giving a
comparison between new and old rollercoaster technology.
Construction of RITA began in
September/October of the 2004 season with UG Land and the skyride being
closed over the busy Halloween and Firework period. Although it was known
that RITA would be a European first - a launched coaster at speeds of
100km/h, it was unknown of the layout and theme of the new ride. This soon
became clear when construction continued in the early winter months of
2005 and the figure of 8 shape and racing theme emerged.
RITA opened on the 1st April 2005
and is a very popular rollercoaster, giving a completely new and different
sensation to any rollercoaster already at Alton Towers. The 80m launch
section of the ride is the highlight of the coaster with riders being
'glued back to their seat' due to the G forces. The ride then descends into
a sharp right turn to complete the figure of 8 circuit featuring 2
excellent airtime hills. The ride sharply hits the break and returns
downwards, again to the right into the station, where you are unloaded.
RITA is a must for all thrill
seekers and the photo booth is positioned opposite the exit.
If only one RITA car is operating
be aware that you will be in for a long queue due to the reasons that not
only is RITA slow in loading, but the car has to stop twice, once to
offload riders and then again to allow the new riders to board.
Conversely, when both trains are operating the queue is extremely quick.
Also, don't fasten your harness too
tightly as you will not be able to enjoy the weightlessness feeling during
the airtime hills mid-ride.
