The Splash Kart Challenge replaced The Swan Boats
on the small lake in Merrie England in 2004 which before the Swans, was
previously filled by the Splash Kats since 1987. There was much
controversy around this ride at the beginning of the 2004 season because,
the ticket prices rose and the pay-per-ride Splash Kart Challenge replaced
a ride included in the ticket price, the Swans. At £3 per ride it
was not popular with Alton Towers' Fans.
The ride fits very well in Merrie England, an
interesting attraction to first see
when you enter the park and often creates the 'we will go on that later'
line. The 1 seat karts are guided around a large circuit in the lake
which bends and turns steadily and are driven by the driver. The ironic
thing about the ride is, after paying £3 to ride, you find you can't
overtake and its not a race at all!
If you are not a thrill seeker or
you just want to get away from the more nauseous and ‘scary’
attractions, this is the ride for you. But watch out, this is not a short
ride, at a steady few miles per hour you can’t expect to get off quickly!
