Gloomy Wood is situated between Katanga Canyon and Forbidden Valley and is often used as a stop off point for people who decide to walk to AIR and Nemesis and not take the Skyride. The only ride is Duel - the haunted house strikes back, but the area is host to an interesting joke shop called spooks-r-us and Zoombie Bites. Gloomy Wood can get very busy during lunch time and in the afternoon with people walking straight through the main square to get to Forbidden Valley.

History of Gloomy Wood

Gloomy Wood is the most recent area that has been added at Alton Towers. It was born as a path in 1990, when Thunder Valley (Forbidden Valley) was developing with the addition of the Thunder Looper and Alton Towers needed another route to the area besides the Skyride. The area developed slowly and a few stalls were added selling ice creams and sweets.

The Haunted house was built in 1992 and the area officially became Gloomy Wood and most recently the Haunted House was revamped to Duel - the haunted house strikes back, an indoor laser ride.
