The Gardens

When the 1st Earl, John Talbot died the estate passed down the lines of the Talbot family and was home to all the Earl’s of Shrewsbury in succession. It wasn’t until the 1800’s and the 15th Earl of Shrewsbury, Charles that there was any significant changes to the Towers and Gardens. When he became Earl, he saw huge potential in the estate and work began immediately and lakes and pools were dug around the grounds. His vision was for the grounds of the house to become one of the best gardens in Britain. The gardens were first opened to the public in 1860.

The Alton Towers Gardens are some of the most spectacular sculptured gardens in the entire of the UK. The Gardens house conservatories, elegant fountains and a large array of plants.

The gardens are massive, so do be warned, if you go off track you are likely to get lost! Follow the numerous marked paths to enjoy and navigate the gardens and monuments.

The gardens are best enjoyed in summer by relaxing with a picnic on the many grass lawns, but are open throughout the season.
