Nemesis was the new attraction for the
1994 season, but during the construction in 1993 and winter period before
the park opened, Alton Towers did not release many clues about what the ride
was to be. Once the park was opened many rollercoaster fans poured into
Alton Towers to ride Nemesis, there first glimpse when travelling on the
monorail which travels over the centre of the Nemesis track. Alton Towers
had installed a B and M Suspended rollercoaster but this was different to
those previously built (mostly in the USA) as the track turns and twists in
a huge blown out pit. This is because Alton Towers are not permitted to
build attractions that go above tree level or are to loud, this is why the
Thunderlooper was removed in 1996.
The story
behind the ride is that when work was being carried out, diggers heard a
very loud, strange noise. This was the movement of a huge underground
monster. The workmen's only chance of survival was to capture or stop the
monster, they built a massive turning and twisting track which still lays
there today, keeping Nemesis trains under control. If you cannot see
Nemesis when you first enter Forbidden Valley, you will definitely hear
its 'roar' as the trains are launched through the many inversions and
turns. Being such a popular ride this is the one where you need a virtual
queue ticket (pick one up when you walk past even you are not certain
about riding) as Nemesis quite often attracts queues in excess of 1.5
hours on busy days.
The ride
itself comprises of many inversions, turns and twists. I am not going to say
that much about the ride and describe all its loops and bends because it
will spoil the ride, but just let me leave you with this comment - The
Roller Coaster Club Of Great Britain have voted Nemesis as being the best
steel coaster since its opening in 1994.
Whether you hate or enjoy Nemesis you will be appreciate
that it was the biggest adrenaline rush and the most intense 90 seconds of
your life.
